Japan’s urban future: Hello Kitakyushu

In addition to being selected as the first green growth model city in Asia for policy assessment by the OECD, this week sees the city of Kitakyushu host the Asian Environmental Cities Summit to discuss Japanese cooperation for other Asian cities to resolve their environmental problems, such as air and water pollution. The summit sees Kitakyushu host mayors and officals from the cities of Tianjin, Chongqing and Lanzhou in China, and the Bangkok metropolitan government as well as the province and the city of Chiang Mai in Thailand and will conclude with an adopted statement of future intent tomorrow.

Officials from Kitakyushu City‘s bureaus of City Planning and Construction visited Transport for London today to look at the Barclays Cycle Superhighway and the hydrogen vehicle fleet of London Buses. Kitakyushu hopes to learn from London’s example as it goes forward with its Asian Center for Low Carbon Society.
