“Fukushima Today” Symposium and Reception at UCL

“Fukushima Today” Symposium and Reception Hosted by University College London to Promote the Attractions of the Prefecture

On Friday, July 28, Fukushima Prefecture took part in a symposium and reception hosted by University College London (UCL) to explain the progress of recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake and nuclear accident and the appeal of Fukushima products.

At the symposium, Mr. Takuya Nemoto, Director of the Public Relations Division of Fukushima Prefecture, gave a presentation titled “Fukushima Today”.

Mr. Nemoto explained that since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 and the nuclear power plant accident, Fukushima Prefecture has been working on decontamination to remove scattered radioactive materials as well as carrying out inspections using internationally high standards of food safety measures. As a result, food import restrictions which had been placed by 55 countries and regions immediately after the accident, have been reduced to 7 countries and regions as of August 15, 2023.

At the Fukushima-themed reception that followed the symposium, staff offered a wide range of Fukushima Prefecture products to people in London participating in the event, such as peach juice and popcorn, also well received by former Prime Minister Johnson at another event, as well as sake from Fukushima Prefecture, which has won high praise at various competitions including the National New Sake Competition and the International Wine Challenge (IWC).
