A tale of two systems

The BBC is reporting that some parts of Britain are suffering from limited or no broadband access (so-called ‘notspots’) and that the government is pledging to wire up the rest of the country by 2012. Apparently it’s a similar story in Germany as well.

However, the BBC also report today that Japan has access to some of the fastest broadband speeds on the planet, but government intervention is necessary to ensure that all of the country can benefit from this. Currently the Japanese government subsidises the installation costs for its FTTH 1Gbps network to the tune of 33%. Under the ‘Zero Broadband Areas Elimination’ policy, all of Japan should have high speed broadband access by March 2011.
