In Japan however, the town&#8217;s reputation is that of the UK&#8217;s most prominent hub for manga and anime, with an annual <a href=\"http:\/\/jlgc.wordpress.com\/2011\/03\/01\/visit-to-middlesbrough-2\/\">Animex festival<\/a> at Teesside University, while last weekend saw the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nemacon.org.uk\/\">Nemacon<\/a> held in Middlesbrough Town Hall.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/this-britain\/the-manga-girls-of-middlesbrough-2299942.html\"><em>The Independent<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/photoblog.msnbc.msn.com\/_news\/2011\/06\/20\/6897890-manga-fans-gather-in-middlesbrough-england\">MSBNC<\/a> were on hand to cover the council-backed event, as were the <em>Guardian<\/em>. <em>The Independent<\/em> and <em>Metro<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/pictures.metro.co.uk\/Middlesborough\/877536\/Manga-And-Anime-Enthusiasts-Dress-Up-For-NemaCon-2011\">also<\/a> have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/this-britain\/the-manga-girls-of-middlesbrough-2299942.html?action=Gallery\">pictures<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When most British people think of Middlesbrough their first thoughts tend to be of chemical factories or its unemployment, crime or life expectancy rates.
