{"id":12151,"date":"2023-11-22T16:28:46","date_gmt":"2023-11-22T16:28:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jlgc.org.uk\/en\/?page_id=12151"},"modified":"2024-10-23T16:29:44","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T15:29:44","slug":"jlgc-seminar-2023-report-carbon-neutral-cities-in-japan-and-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.jlgc.org.uk\/en\/projects-and-activities\/jlgc-seminar\/jlgc-seminar-2023-report-carbon-neutral-cities-in-japan-and-the-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"JLGC Seminar 2023 report &#8211; Carbon Neutral Cities in Japan and the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1>Activities and Events<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jlgc.org.uk\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/JLGC-Seminar-banner-2023-2048x1024-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jlgc.org.uk\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/JLGC-Seminar-banner-2023-2048x1024-1.png 2048w, https:\/\/www.jlgc.org.uk\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/JLGC-Seminar-banner-2023-2048x1024-1-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.jlgc.org.uk\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/JLGC-Seminar-banner-2023-2048x1024-1-1024x512.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.jlgc.org.uk\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/JLGC-Seminar-banner-2023-2048x1024-1-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/www.jlgc.org.uk\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/JLGC-Seminar-banner-2023-2048x1024-1-1536x768.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This event has now taken place.&nbsp; A summary is below.<\/strong><br><br>On November 22 JLGC held our annual JLGC Seminar online, which this year looked at collaborative actions to promote carbon neutrality among local and regional governments in Japan and the UK.&nbsp; This followed our Japan Study Tour earlier this year to Tokyo and Kagoshima, where participants from across UK local government were able to see decarbonisation efforts of Japanese local governments in situ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After our Director General <strong>Akira Matsutani<\/strong> opened the event by setting out the parameters and context of the decarbonisation challenge in Japan, <strong>Toshifumi Fukuyasa<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jlgc.org.uk\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/20231122_Tokyo-Metropolitan-Government.pdf\">Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Environment<\/a> spoke on the role of mandating photovoltaic power systems in new developments in the capital, while <strong>Shuhei Sato<\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jlgc.org.uk\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/20231122_Tokorozawa-City.pdf\">&#8220;Machigoto Ecotown&#8221; Promotion Section<\/a> of the Tokorozawa City Government outlined how it intends to become a Zero Carbon City by 2050 through the promotion of renewable energy and &#8216;smart houses&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We then convened a panel discussion between a range of UK partner organisations to examine how their counterparts in British cities also address the challenges of decarbonisation. <strong>Will Mapplebeck<\/strong> at Core Cities UK (a participant on our 2023 Japan Study Tour) spoke on how UK cities are utilising the 3Ci (Cities Commission for Climate Investment) platform to collaborate and innovate around climate finance, while <strong>Conor Carey<\/strong> of London &amp; Partners addressed the role of international cooperation between the two capitals&#8217; startup ecosystems in promoting sustainable business growth, particularly the upcoming &#8216;SusHi-Tech&#8217; innovation summit being held in Tokyo over April-May 2024. <strong>Nick Porter<\/strong> of the Local Government Association was able to detail its own international work looking at benchmarking local climate actions and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.local.gov.uk\/case-studies?topic%5B2465%5D=2465\"> the innovative work taking place in English local councils<\/a>, while <strong>Sean Owen<\/strong> outlined how the Greater Manchester Combined Authority is engaged around the low carbon agenda for the city region, not least the upcoming delegation to Tokyo and Osaka being led by Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and UK-Japan Trade Envoy Greg Clark MP in December 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Seminar was moderated by <strong>Heather Jameson<\/strong>, Editor of <em>The Municipal Journal<\/em>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Activities and Events This event has now taken place.&nbsp; A summary is below.
